The dental industry is currently debating whether or not these fillings pose any significant risk to our health. Mercy is a neurotoxin, and at certain levels can cause many issues, including neurological issues, chronic illnesses, autoimmune disease, and mental disorders. The problem is most people, a whooping 72% of those surveyed didn't even know their fillings contained mercury. 92% of those said they would have wanted to know that information when that filling was first put in their mouth.
Even more starling is that fact that these fillings in our mouth can vapor into the environment, and into our body. According to OSHA the level of vapor that is released is at unhealthy high levels, and is above their allotted levels of vapors found in a standard work place air quality standard. This exposure can increase as well depending on such things as chewing gum, drinking carbonated drinks, and grinding teeth.
The US National Health and Nutrition Examination, surveyed 31,000 adults in 2001, and what they found was that the number of fillings correlated to the incidence of cancer, thyroid conditions, mental conditions, respiratory disease, eye disease, and neurological issues. But the FDA has somehow concluded that, the correlations do not sufficiently demonstrate causation. Currently the FDA and ADA has taken on the position that fillings containing mercury are safe, and any dentist that recommends removal due to health concerns from mercury vapors is deemed unethical and could have their license revoked.
