Running can be totally intimidating to someone starting out. You may not know where to start or even how long to run for, and often times a new runner, will push themselves too hard, and then regret it, and not return to the training process. Getting Back in Shape Tips
Just like many of you, here at I Feel Great Today, the beginning of the year means setting goals to get in better shape for the summer. Now that spring is here, you like us are in panic mode. Here are some helpful tips to jump start your new healthy lifestyle.
- Start out Slow and Steady-don't come out of the gate like you are an seasoned athlete. A common mistake people make is by working out to hard the first few times, it will cause you to be very sore, and possible hurt yourself and that can throw off your new workout goals. A little soreness is a good sign, but don't over due it. Light and slow the first couple of workouts, with gradual progress is the way to long term health.
- Set a long term goal, with check points along the way- With any plan you need an end goal, for example the overall weight you want to lose or lowering your cholesterol by a certain amount of points. To keep on track with your end goal, its a great idea to have bench marks along the way to ensure your success. For example by May 15th, I want to to have lost 10 pounds of the total 50 pounds of my end goal. This helps keep you motivated, and helps you get to the bigger goal.
- Get a workout buddy- working out with someone else can help you stay committed and motivated to a workout plan. Its always easier to skip the gym or not push yourself when your working out alone, but if someone else is going to the gym with you, they can keep you motivated to go, and to work to you full potential while your there.
- Have Fun-remember that getting in shape and improving your health is good for your physical condition as well as your mental condition. It can lower anxiety and curb depression, and help turn a blue day into a GREAT day!! Create a fun upbeat playlist, reward yourself for reaching your benchmarks, and participate in a fun workout classes.
