Sauna Health and Beauty Benefits!!

Yesterday as I was sweating my booty off sitting in the sauna I thought "How safe are Saunas really"? I mean I was sitting in the sauna at the gym so they have to pretty safe for the gym to promote them. After coming home I decided to do some research and there are some major health benefits.

Burns Calories-When your in a sauna you are sweating, sweating itself takes a lot of energy. That energy is from the conversion of carbs and fat in a process that burns calories
Flushes out Toxins-Saunas cause the body to go into a deep sweat mode which Doctors have said has many benefits to detoxifying the body. Deep sweating in a sauna can help to reduce toxins that are commonly picked up in our environment, toxins such as mercy, nickel, cooper, lead, zinc and various chemicals.
Relieves Stress-Stress has a huge effect on our daily life and overall health. The heat of the sauna relaxes the body, improves circulation and stimulates the release of endorphins, which is the body's natural feel good chemical.
Soothes Aches and Pains and Relaxes Muscles-In high heat the body releases endorphins, which can have a enjoyable tranquilizing effect and ability to stop the muscle soreness for working out. Being in a sauna also causes body temperature to rise, causing blood vessels to dilate and circulation to increase. That increased blood flow also accelerates the body's natural healing process, and soothes aches, and pains.
Cleanses the Skin-Deep sweating causes the skin to cleanse and dead skin cells replaced. Sweet rinses bacteria out of the epidermal layer and sweat ducts. Cleansing the pores improves the capillary circulation and gives the skin a soft, beautiful appearance.

Regardless of the health benefits, you should not go in a sauna is you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Blood Pressure Problems
  • Heart Problems
  • Severe Aortic Stenosis
  • Myocardial Infarction
  • Pregnant or Trying to conceive
  • You are a child
  • You are ill at the time.
Overall sauna use has many health benefits if used properly. The recommendation is that you don't spend more than 20 minutes in a sauna at a time, and if you feel ill or faint to exit right away. A sauna can make you feel good and look good, so enjoy the heat!

The Hazards of Nail Polish!!

The other day as I was nearly passing out from the smell as I was putting on nail polish I had this thought. How safe is nail polish really? Now I know its not like organic and chemical free, so I know to some degree its unsafe, but I wanted to know if I should never paint my nails again or what. So I set out to do some research, on the chemical in nail polish and if there is a better health alternative.

Most Nail Polishes Contain the Following Chemicals:

  • Formaldehyde- yes the same chemical used to preserve dead things, is a known human carcinogen and can also cause eye, throat, nose and skin irritation.
  • DBP -is a known reproductive and developmental toxin.
  • Toluene-maybe a reproductive and developmental toxin and can also cause headaches, dizziness and fatigue.

All these chemicals can be absorbed into the body through the nail bed. The good news is that after 2007, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics campaigned and got some mainstream nail polish brands such as Orly, Sally Hansen and OPI, to remove one or two of those chemicals from their nail polish.  They are more limited than in the past, but they are still present in nail polish.

You can even get Nail Polish Poisoning, which is from swallowing or breathing in (inhaling) nail polish.
This causes problems with your kidneys  bladder, eyes, nose, lungs, nervous system, and heart just to name a few.

Nail polish doesn't just effect your health, it effects the environment as well. When you throw those bottles away they leak into the soil and groundwater. Nail polish is even listed in many household hazardous waste departments as hazardous waste to be accepted at their facility.

So what is the alternative, well you can choose nail polishes that are made without harmful chemicals by checking to see if the company signed with the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, and search for options on the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Database. If you are really worried about the health and environmental effects, you can just do all natural, and opt out of using polish all together, and you can Google ways to do natural manicures!

Benefits of Grass-Fed Beef!!

There has been a debate for some time over grass-fed beef vs grain-fed beef. The fact is that if you buy grass-fed beef, it means an overall better choice for your health, the environment, and the local economy. Now that people are getting more educated grass-fed beef is a more common product in regular grocery stores too. The benefits of eating grass-fed beef are extensive, below are the major ones.

Benefits of Grass-Fed Beef:
Eats Only Grass-The grass-fed cow, is not "finished" on a diet of grains and supplements for rapid weight gain. Its better for the eater because its less overall fat, more omega 3s, and other good fats. Its also more humane for the cow, and better for the planet. Be careful because all cows do graze grass (the pasture) for the first six months to a year of their lives, but most finish at a feedlot on a concentrated mix of corn, soy, grains and other supplements, plus antibiotics and hormones.
Lower in Calories-Grass-fed beef is lower in calories, contains more healthy omega-3 fats, more vitamins A and E, higher levels of antioxidants, and up to seven times the beta-carotene.
Support Local Economy-Grass-fed beef can give you the chance to buy from a local farmer, and support the local economy. That way you are also guaranteed a more fresh meat, and you know exactly where your meat came from.
Healthy Nutrition-Grass-fed beef is high in omega 3s, B-vitamins, beta-carotene, and good natural occurring trans fats.

Once again eating organically AKA grass-fed beef is the best choice. Eating grass-fed beef is healthier because there are no added supplements, hormones and antibiotics, and also is lower in calories. It gives us the chance to support and buy local. Once again eating organically AKA healthier is going to involve more effort, more money and more time. But its worth it, in the end.
