In terms of microwave popcorn, it is not the popcorn that is not health, its actually the bag that it is cooked in.The problem is the chemicals that are used in the bag's lining. The lining of the bag contain Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA), which is also used to make Teflon and other stain and stick resistant material, including pizza boxes. The chemicals in the bag's lining get into our bloodstream because they vaporize and migrate into the popcorn during microwaving, and can stay in your body for years.
Heath Problems Associated with Perfluoroctanoic Acid:
- Liver Cancer
- Testicular Cancer
- Pancreatic Cancer
- Infertility in Women
- Interfere with Children's Vaccinations, making them ineffective.
- Thyroid Disease
Alternatives to Microwave Popcorn:
- Buying the kernels, and popping them in the microwave, using a regular brown paper bag, like the one you pack your lunch in. Then add your own flavoring at the end, which is also good, because you can determine how much butter, and calories go into your popcorn.
- Invest in a popcorn popping machine, usually found online or in most housewares, and department stores.
- The old fashioned way of by popping it with some heavy oil, in a covered pot.
As always, this method of doing things is going to be less convenient and maybe tad bit more costly, but what is that compared the health problems you would be guarding yourself from in the long run. Here at IFGT, we are always willing to take the less convenient way, if that means our health is being protected, hope you are too!
